Today (Thursday) we had a substitute for Mrs. Evans. It rained a lot! We read our reindeer stories and created Morse Code messages. Then we went to Mrs. Heaberlin's class and worked on our Shades of Gray/Civil War projects. After that we played Jeopardy in Mr. Exner's class. One of the questions was "what is the radius of a circle with a diameter of 15cm?" Can you answer that? Send us a comment if you can.

We began the day by checking our Daily Language sheet. After that, we went to the restrooms. Then we watched a Civil War video over Reconstruction. We went to the library to meet our guest speaker, Mark Warren. We learned about archery and Native Americans from our area, the Muskogee. He shot a bow and arrow and told us about the Tulip tree. Did you know that the indians made bows strong and bendable by using just one ring of a tree? We changed to Mr. Exner and went to lunch. After that we went outside to play. In Mr. Exner's class we played some math games and took our benchmark test. Then we went to music for specials. Then we all went home!

Cricket's Visit by Evan
Cricket's visit has been the best thing ever this year. Cricket is an alligator; he's fun to watch! When I have an assignment, I always look at him like he gives me the answer or something. I'm very thankful that he came here to our school. Cricket came on a Wednesday, the day of the 5th grade field trip to GYSTC. We got to pet Cricket. He was a scaley little one. I was scared to pet him at first, but I got over it. On Friday, the 21st of November, was Cricket's last day. Mrs. Cindy, a helper for the school, came in class and let us pet Cricket. It was shocking when I found out that he was leaving. Cricket was like a man's best friend to everyone. He was a very talented little alligator. It's hard for everyone because he's touched everyone's heart, even the teachers. Cricket is like a human friend, and when he leaves everyone is going to be sad. Cricket was saved near the National Park and was brought here. We love Cricket with all of our hearts.

When we all walked in the door, we started doing morning work. Then we did language. We had to do a venn diagram on how alligators and crocodiles are different and alike. Then we switched to Mrs. Heaberlin's class. First we checked Wordly Wise A. Next we started a new outline on vertebrates. Mrs. Heaberlin drew a picture of a fish and all of his fins. Then we switched to Mr.Exner's class. Almost always right when we go to him, we go straight to lunch. Today for lunch we had either lasagna or grilled chicken nuggets; it was delicous. We go to recess right after lunch. We have a game called four square; everybody loves to play it. After recess we go back to Mr.Exner's room, and we finished our Math test. Then we played a game. Finally it's almost the end of the day, and we switch back to Mrs.Evans. Then we got ready to go home. Then we went to specials. We had computer today and that is how the day went.

Cricket by Kailey
Cricket is an alligator from the state park in Florence, GA. He is so cute. Cricket is a baby. We've been trying to hear him bark, but when we're loud he barks. When we look at him, he just freezes. He is going to be in our class for a week. Even though it is illegal to have an alligator as a pet, we have special permission to keep him in our classroom. We put tape over the lid of the glass cage so that nobody would try to open it, and so that Cricket wouldn't try to get out.

from Thursday 11/13
Today when we got to class, Mr. Exner took our new alligator, Cricket, out of his cage. Then we sat down and did our morning work. After that the girls went to puberty class with Nurse Carol while the boys played Jeopardy with Mr. Exner. Then the girls came back and the boys left. When everyone was back, we worked on our Civil War folders. We watched a movie called Ben Wagner. It's about a boy who moves and meets a girl accused of being a witch. Then we had lunch. It was the Thanksgiving meal. We had our recess and went back to the classroom. We went to Mr. Exner's class and went over our practice sheet and played a game. Then we went back to homeroom. We went to music and played our recorders. Some people stayed after school for Mr. Exner's study group. It was way fun.

Today I was the helper, and I took lots of pictures. I went to Mrs. Gilchrist for reading, and then back to homeroom for social studies where we watched a movie. In Mrs. Heaberlin's we did a spelling bee. I was one of ten people to stay in. Next we went to Mr. Exner's, lunch, and recess. I went to Nurse Carol for my medicine, and then we went back to Mr. Exner's and made rockets. We packed up and went to specials. That was the end of my day.

Book Fair-Wow

Our book fair was great this year-wonderful books, wonderful parents, and lots of fun. Thanks Mrs. Freeburg for this great event. I have to send a huge thank you to those parents who purchased books for our classroom. I know the kids are going to love reading these-I brought them home this weekend so that I could choose which one to read first-a very difficult decision. Here's what we received:
Everything but the Kitchen Sink by Frieda Wishinsky from Drew and BJ
Seekers by Erin Hunter from Seth and Angela
The Dark Pond by Joseph Bruchac from McKenzie and Deborah
The Treasures of Weatherby by Zilpha Keatley Snyder and Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand by Gail Carson Levine from Chad and Jennifer. In todays world reading skills are more important than ever. The only way for students to improve their reading skills is by practicing and the best way to get them to practice is by providing them with fun and interesting reading material. So again, thanks to everyone who participated in the book fair.

Yesterday we had so much fun. We did Adjectives, Nouns, and Verbs in Mrs. Evans' class and wrote Thanksgiving Poems. After that we talked about our story we are reading, Shades of Gray, in Mrs. Heaberlin's class. Then we went to Mr. Exner's and the first thing we did was play a game. Then we went to lunch. After lunch we went outside and played four square for a long time. We went inside and finished our game. He gave us homework. We went back to Mrs. Evans' class and got ready for specials. Today was computer lab.
Note from Mrs. Evans: Isn't it great how even language and writing become "fun" activities with our new Promethean Board!

A Normal Day Reported by Marissa
Nov. 5th 2008
Today we had a normal day. We did Language, and we tried to watch a video of Barack Obama's acceptance speech, but the internet was not working. For lunch we had fried chicken or pork roast. Lunch was good, and we had watermelon. Mr. Exner is showing us how alcohol is made. It is a chemical change. You change sugar to alcohol which is called bioconversion. Today we had music and practiced our recorders. Again, a normal day.

Lauren's Oregon Trail diary
May 2, 1835
We've been traveling over a month, we started off at Independence, MO on March 25, 1835. We started on the Oregon trail as soon as winter broke. We have to make it to Oregon City before next winter. We're camping tonight at the base of Chimney Rock. To me it looks like a finger pointing up to heaven. Mama says, "Thank the heavens that we got this far." She really worried last week when the lightening storm came. We all got in the wagon and prayed. Eventually the rain stopped and all we lost was a little time, but we were able to keep on moving.

4H Demonstrations by Kailey
In Mrs. Evans' class, we are working on our 4H demonstrations. I am doing Yuck to Wow. Yuck to Wow is horse grooming. Some people are doing 4 square, baseball, horses, stained glass, and more. We have to perform in 2 weeks. We've been really busy for a few weeks. We have to take our posters home on Friday, so that we can practice in front of parents, stuffed animals, or anybody or anything. Then we will bring them back and do our demonstrations.
Also at the November meeting our new officers will run our 4-H meeting. The new officers are Kailey-President, Marissa-Vice President, Kendall-Secretary, and River-Reporter. There was an officer meeting on the 20th and 29th of October. They'll be nervous, but they will do really well.

Working on posters

We worked on our demonstration posters today after testing. When designing a poster there are many things to think about. Here are some tips:
Use full size poster board
Posters should be readable from 12 feet away-no tiny lettering
Do not roll posters!!
Posters contain only the main points-not everything you are going to say.
Pictures should relate to the topic.
Thanks to all those who are helping us with our posters: Lauren's mom, Chad's mom, Mrs. Cindy, and Mrs. Freeburg.
We will work on posters next week in class, and then we will take them home for any finishing touches. Practice your demonstration several times in front of stuffed animals, your parents, or anyone you can get to listen. We will give the demonstrations to our class on November 7th.
These demonstrations cover several of our Georgia Performance Standards including:
ELA5LSV2-The student listens to and views various forms of text and media in order to gather and share information...when delivering or responding to presentations, the student (a) shapes information to achieve a particular purpose and to appeal to the interests and bakground knowledge of audience memebers. (b)uses notes, multimedia, or other memory aids(posters) to structure the presentation (c) engages the audience witth appropriate verbal cues and eye contact (d) projects a sense of individuality and personality in selecting and organizing content and delivery

Pictures, Music, and more

Today was Fall picture retakes. People who needed retakes went to the gym. After that, they came back and we did lunch count. then we started ITBS testing. We took spelling, punctuation, and word usage. It took us 2 hours and that included snack and stretching. Then we went outside to play for a little bit. I took a lot of pictures out there. We came inside and switched classes. We went to Mrs. Heaberlin’s class. We were watching a movie when Mrs. Yeager came announced that we were going to have a fire drill in 1 minute. so we turned off the Smartboard and went outside when the “ding-dong” of the bell went off. Then we went inside and finished the movie. After that we went back to Mrs. Evans’ room and packed up and headed to music. In music we have to take our recorders because we are learning to play them. If we don’t take them we will get a referral.

ITBS testing and more

Today when we all walked in class, we knew it ITBS testing. But we all knew it was ok because we saw that we would face Mr.Exner's homeroom class in Jeopardy afterward. It was so fun. First we took three parts of the ITBS test; none of it was hard. Next we found out that we get to go outside when we got done with testing. Mrs.Evans let me use her digital camera to take pictures of the day. After we got done with recess, we went back inside to go play Mr.Exner's homeroom. We started the game off with a social studies question. It all ended up with our class winning and their class losing for the second time. Next we went to lunch and ate. Then we went to go play outside I took some pictures of some people that wanted me to. Then we went back to Mr.Exner's class to finish the the game. When we finally got finished we all got ready to go to computer lab to do a project for Mr.Exner. I had to go take the Acedemic test (which wasn't very long). When I got finished I went down to the computer lab, and we took a survey on what would be good for your science project. I get to do something with rocket science. Then Emily and I went to Mrs.Wagner's room to take a buzzer test. It was really hard. When we were done, we were all so relieved that it was over. I guess that is all how it went down. Thanks a lot for the good day. (Noah, Collin, and Emily made the Academic Bowl Team!!!

Christopher's Essay
The Jail Cell
By Christopher
Being the middle child is awful! You are lucky if you are a youngest or oldest child. I am living in a jail cell! Someone get me out of here!!
I don’t ever get to go out with my parents! Whenever they are going somewhere, like when my dad goes to Hastings, or when my mom is going to the grocery store, they never let me go. I always hear, “Come on David, lets go to Hastings and get some pizza.” Or my mom will say, “ Come on Zoe, lets go to the grocery store! If you do, I’ll take you wherever you want to go!” I never hear, “Come on Christopher, lets go somewhere fun.”
I do a ton of chores! My brother only has to take out the trash and clean our bathroom, and my sister has to clean the living room, but my mom does that for her! So basically my sister and my brother get to sit on their lazy behinds, while I get ordered around! All I hear is, “Christopher, do the dishes, or wipe down that table, or do the laundry!” I wish for once in my life, I would get to see the couch potatoes cleaning the house while I sit on my behind and watch T.V.
My brother always gets things before me. He even got a queen sized bed, and I’m still stuck with our bunk bed the we have had since we were five and six. My parents said that I was going to get my brother’s Wildcat when he doesn’t want it any more. Gee, I wonder how long that will take!

Kailey's Essay
Youngest Child
By Kailey
Being the youngest child is extremely difficult, when you have an older brother. Dallas, my older brother, is way stronger than me. I have a rough life living with him.
I hate it when Dallas tells me how hard middle school is going to be, or how mean the teachers are except for Mr. Knight, his science teacher. I may have to get a tooth pulled, so he tells me how painful that is. I especially hate it when he twists my arm and pulls it back. I always yell, “Stop it, Stop it!” until he stops. He scares me a lot.
Dallas is way smarter than me. He is in 8th grade. He got chosen to go to China with People to People. You have to be really smart to go with that group. He is a straight A student. I wish I were smarter than him, but I am not.
Dallas is 4 years older than me. Next year he will get to drive. That is really scary. He hogs the T.V. too much. He plays Halo and Ace Combat all the time. Same with my dad. When I walk into the room and see them playing video games, I think, “Oh no, T.V. hogs are in the house.” Dallas starts high school next year. I can’t wait until he goes to college.

Alyssa's Essay
My Life as the Youngest
by Alyssa
Being the youngest is very difficult. You get bossed around by your older siblings. It is always about my sister. I can barely ever talk about things going on in my life.
My sister makes me do everything for her. I mean everything! How do you think I feel? I have to do all of my chores and whatever she wants me to do, or she will yell and scream at me! Sometimes I wish I was the mom, so I could give her so many chores she could never go off and have any fun!
Being the youngest, you get yelled at by your older siblings or whoever. Most of the attention goes to your older siblings. It is kind of unfair. My sister always says, “Get out of my room! You are so annoying!”
I barely ever get my own clothes. Most of my clothes are my sister’s hand-me-downs. Some of the clothes I want, others I don’t. Some of the clothes are cute, others aren’t. It just irritates me so bad! I think I could just blow!

Our Essays

In writing, we have been working on writing 4 paragraph essays. We used the book My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother as a spark for this activity. Students wrote about their position in their family. We carried this piece of writing through the whole writing process: brainstorming, rough draft, revision, editing, publication. Many of the essays were very good. We will be posting some for you to read. Please send us a comment if you read them. We'd love to know what you think.
Enjoy
